Unlocking Your Awesomeness: Interview With Ginger Kadlec Part 1

Today’s interview is with the extraordinary Ginger Kadlec a child advocate, child forensic interviewer, and writer who is helping improve the lives of our nation’s children! On Ginger’s website she writes, “Caring, capable adults improve the world one child at a time” check out her site here. I was happy to ask her a few questions about her work and all the wonderful things she’s doing.

1.) What made you decide to make a dramatic change in your life, leaving your executive job to work with and help children?

Frankly, I *lucked* into it! My husband and I worked for several years in the corporate world and were at a point in our lives where we wanted a little more personal flexibility – you know, to travel, spend more time with each other and just enjoy life. So, we both decided to pursue freelance consulting and project work. During that time, a dear friend of mine was a board member for a child advocacy center called Chaucie’s Place. The executive director who helped start the center moved on to another opportunity, so the board was looking for someone to serve as interim director for several months while they conducted their search for a replacement. My background seemed to fit the bill. Well, it didn’t take long before I immediately fell head over heels in love with child advocacy work.

2.) How long have you been working with children? Would you mind explaining a bit more about what a child forensic interviewer is?

I have worked with children as a volunteer on-and-off through the years, but in a dedicated child advocacy capacity since 2008. I became a child forensic interviewer in 2009.

Basically, a child forensic interview takes place in cases of alleged child sexual or physical abuse, or neglect as part of an investigation by law enforcement or child protective authorities. Typically, a multidisciplinary team (“MDT”… which often includes representatives from child advocacy, law enforcement, prosecution, child protective services and victim advocacy) conducts a neutral, child-friendly interview of the alleged victim to gather information about abuse that may or may not have happened. There are various protocols for child forensic interviewing, but I am trained in and am a guest instructor for the Child First/Finding Words interview structure. Ideally, a child speaks one-on-one with a trained interviewer who follows protocol, keeping the child’s needs at the forefront of the interview. The child and interviewer are in a comfortable room while the rest of the MDT watches the interview via closed-circuit TV in another room. The interviewer often wears an earpiece so the MDT members can ask questions of the interviewer without disrupting the conversation with the child. It’s truly an amazing model and is much friendlier and less-scary for children than going to, for example, a police department (even those with “soft rooms”). Child advocacy centers often present a home-like feel, with toys, books, games, comfy furniture and bright or pastel colors (or even murals) on the walls. They don’t “feel” like places where criminal or child protection investigations happen.

Speaking of which, alleged perpetrators are not allowed on the premises. In the event an alleged perpetrator is another child (which, believe it or not happens pretty frequently) and a forensic interview is needed for that child, the alleged perpetrator would come to the center at a time when the alleged victim is not present. Many times when the alleged perpetrator is a child, we’ll want to talk to that child to see if he, himself, is a victim of abuse.

3.) What would you say is a good way to empower children and help them feel safe, secure, and confident?

I think there are several ways to empower children that can begin as soon as they become verbal! Here are my Top Four suggestions:

1st Listen and believe! I believe these to be the most important actions parents can take in empowering children. Heck, even we adults feel good when someone is paying attention to us, right? I think it’s even more important with kids – it helps them feel valued and validated. In the event a child discloses abuse to an adult, it is imperative that the adult immediately believe the child… no matter how outlandish the child’s accusations or stories may seem. Over 90% of child sexual abuse victims know, love or trust their abusers. In fact, over 40% of child sexual abuse happens at the hands of family member. A vivid reminder of how sexual predators can be even the most respected of community icons is the recent scandal involving Penn State Asst. Coach Jerry Sandusky. Remember, the facts will work themselves out during the course of any investigations that take place, but it can be devastating to a child if the adult in whom they confide does not believe them. Additionally, not believing or taking immediate action could potentially lead to further abuse and serious harm for the child.

2nd Teach children the real names of their body parts. This may not seem like such a big deal, but it is! Not only does it help them feel comfortable with their bodies, but it also aids children in the event they are ever sexually abused. For example, a little girl told her teacher that her uncle touched her “buttons”. The teacher innocently assumed the little girl was referring to the buttons on her jacket instead of her breasts and missed an opportunity to intervene and stop the molestation. I interviewed a child once who called a “penis” an “esophagus”… now that’s confusing. J

3rd Teach children which body parts are private… and have them practice saying “NO” to inappropriate touches. This is a basic element of the body safety course for which I am a volunteer instructor. This is pretty important, though… I can’t tell you the number of child forensic interviews in which I’ve been involved where a child didn’t say “no” or put up at least a bit of a fight against a molester’s advances… and they became victims of abuse. On the flip side, kids who know to say “NO!” or offer some resistance are most times left alone. Sexual predators are more likely to abuse children that acquiesce or that they believe can be manipulated. Talking with kids and reinforcing that, “No one has the right to touch a private part of their body for no good reason or just to play a game” is crucial! Also, have children practice saying “NO!” at the top of their lungs. Not only will they enjoy the opportunity to yell, but believe it or not, it really does help them feel empowered to protect themselves, no matter who their perpetrator might be.

4th Maintain an open level of rapport with your child.  Communication is key. I’m a big fan of “sound bite parenting” where parents reinforce key messages in everyday, teachable moments and small bits. Helping kids feel safe isn’t a one-‘n-done deal. It takes a lot of open, candid conversation throughout their childhood and teen years.  The more comfortable parents are in talking with their kids about these issues, the more likely their lines of communication will be two-way and open.

4.) I love the hopeful hints section on your blog it’s filled with lovely quotes and messages. Where do find most of your messages and do you have a favorite quote you’d like to share?

I love quotes and subscribe to different motivational emails, etc., which is the source for several of my Hopeful Hints. One of my favorite websites for finding quotes is “Good Reads” (www.goodreads.com/quotes). I will also use an occasional quote I read on Twitter.
My favorite of the Hopeful Hints I’ve done thus far is, “A very little key will open a very heavy door,” by Charles Dickens. Just by telling one responsible adult, children in abusive situations can find refuge. But it often takes them using that key to even crack that burdensome door. Predators use all sorts of tactics and tricks to keep children from disclosing abuse… and unfortunately, it often works. In fact, I conducted a couple of child interviews just this week where I suspect the perpetrators “coached” these children to keep silent. Oh, how I wish they would have been able to just pull out their little key… but abuse disclosure is a process and doesn’t always happen when those of us involved in investigations think it should.
Next Step
I broke Ginger’s interview into two parts because I didn’t want to shorten any of her answers. Child abuse is an issue that effects everyone. You may have been abused yourself, you may work with children or have children, or you may know someone who's been abused. Our children are the future and it’s up to all of us to help make this world a safe & loving environment for them and for ourselves.
Emotional Freedom Technique has helped many adults and children work through traumas, fear, anxiety, and learn to love & accept themselves. There is a great website that helps teach children how to use EFT www.eftforkids.org. Be sure to check out Ginger’s website www.gingerkadlec.com.

Feeling Real Gratitude

A few days ago I received one of the best comments I’ve gotten on YouTube. He wrote, “Your book is amazing.” He basically shared how he appreciates my non-pickup artist approach in my book, written to help men find a wonderful woman. It made me smile so much. I so appreciated the comment and I felt a huge rush of gratitude going through my system while reading. It got me thinking about real gratitude, the things that make you feel good and truly thankful.

In the past I’ve been super religious about my gratitude lists. I’ve filled up notebooks with lists of things I’m thankful for ranging from Dunkin Donuts bagels to getting my Psychology degree. I have several word documents labeled ‘Gratitude’ and ‘Things I’m Thankful For’ on my laptop and desktop. I know how to do this stuff and a part of me knows how good it makes me feel…so of course I write in my notebook or add to these word documents every day, right? Not quite, sometimes I don’t have a notebook nearby, I’m feeling tired, or I don't want to write anything. Needless to say I don’t always add to my gratitude lists daily. But I do wake up each morning and say 5-10 things I’m grateful for. I do this before I get out of bed and regardless of what kind of mood I’m in.
Our brains are not designed to process gratitude and anxiety at the same time. By making a gratitude list or saying what you are truly grateful for you are occupying your brain with good feeling thoughts! Incredible right? I’m not talking about stuff you wish you were grateful for like a job you’re not happy at or relatives that make you feel like you’re five years old again! If you work at it though, in time you could feel grateful for them too. I’m talking about things that make you feel good and put a smile on your face...sunshine, gluten-free macaroni & cheese, children, the ocean, fluffy pillows, your dog, yoga, awesome kisses, etc. Once you get going you may surprise yourself at how many things you come up with.
Saying something I’m grateful for each morning has become a habit. Learning to start showing, feeling it and expressing gratitude can become a habit. Now this is a habit worth having! Create a new habit or two, make sure they’re uplifting and they put a smile on your face…or at least make you feel less pissed off! Another wonderful habit I’m encouraging everyone to cultivate is practicing EFT. Emotional Freedom Technique is truly empowering and it’s one of the most loving and kind things you can do for yourself. Set an intention to do EFT 10 minutes a day, in the morning, the evening, or you could even do it on your lunch break. Once you do it once a day then you can start doing in twice a day or more. Shoot for 10-20 minutes of tapping a day and you will start to feel better.

Unlocking Your Awesomeness: My Interview with Erica House

My first interview is with the lovely Erica House. She’s a Psychology professor, Eating Counselor, Writer, and all around cool lady! I relate to Erica’s story about having health issues and zero energy and turning it around. I was so excited to send her some questions about health, life, and keeping motivated. Enjoy!

Do you remember the moment you decided to make a real change in your life; was there an exact turning point for you?

I vividly remember my turning point! I stepped on the scale and saw that I was just about to go over 170 for the first time in my life. At 5'2" that put my BMI into the obese category. I decided enough was enough and took some 'before' photos in my undies. The moment I uploaded them to the computer I started crying. I had avoided looking at myself since gaining 50 pounds after high school and seeing the photos was the catalyst I needed to get my butt in gear!

What made you decide to become a vegetarian?

I was never a huge meat eater so it wasn't a hard transition for me. I did some research into how animals are raised/handled before slaughter and decided I could no longer eat meat. I love animals too much to eat them! I also read numerous books and articles on the health benefits of a vegetarian diet and knew it was right for me.

For someone who wants to become a vegetarian, would you give some pointers on making the transition from meat-eater to vegetarian a bit smoother?

Do your homework first! I see many people decide to become vegetarians and think they can just give up meat and be okay. Vegetarians have to be sure they are getting the nutrients they need and some may be difficult (but not impossible!) for non-meat eaters.

In the past you had issues with your diet and weight and you made a lot of changes, are there any tips you can give to someone who wants to start eating better today?

My nutrition tips are so simple they usually frustrate people when they ask me for advice on how to lose weight. Eat colors, don't eat fast food/sugar and don't drink calories. That alone would be enough for most people to start seeing a huge difference!

I also wanted to know if you have any suggestions for ways to get started exercising and if there are more low-impact exercises someone could start with?

One of my favorite exercises is walking. If you keep up a brisk pace it can be a great calorie burner and still very low-impact. Plus, it gets you outside which can help improve your mood as you work on your body!

I love your ‘Happiness Concept Map’ idea it is brilliant! Do you have any other suggestions for getting into a state of happiness & gratitude?

Research has found that keeping a gratitude journal can permanently change your brain so that you start looking for the positives in every situation. At the end, or start, of each day just take a few minutes to think about what your grateful for and what makes you happy in life. Also, try to think of yourself less and others more. That always helps to give me a better perspective.

How do you keep yourself motivated and committed to having a healthier life and a healthier you?

For me, it's remembering what life was like before. I notice such a huge improvement on my mental and physical well-being when I eat right and exercise. I 100% use exercise as therapy! When I'm unable to work out for a few days I notice my anxiety and irritability increasing significantly. When I let my healthy eating habits slide I can start to see how eating poorly makes me feel crummy. I get tired, moody and just feel 'blah.' When you start to notice how incredible you really feel after working out and eating right it becomes a no-brainer!

Wow! I already feel more empowered and committed to a healthier me. Thanks so much for sharing a bit of your wisdom, Erica! Check out Erica’s awesome website here.

Next Step

Notice the things that you want to have, “I want to lose weight,” "I want to practice more gratitude," or “I want to be healthier.” In life, when we come to the universe with a sense of lack, I'm not enough, or any fear-based thinking we’re creating more things to fear and possibly beat ourselves up about! Make a choice to forgive yourself for poor eating, unhealthy thoughts, and unhealthy actions. With forgiveness you automatically relax a bit and allow yourself to open to new possibilities. This includes eating better, feeling better, and loving yourself right now!

Emotional Freedom Technique has helped me begin to create a healthier lifestyle & mindset. It’s also helping me create the kind of life I’ve always wanted.

What Does Your Procrastination Say?

Procrastination...we all procrastinate! Most of us beat ourselves up for it too. I’ve been doing this the past few days; I tend to feel like there is so much more I could be getting done. Have you ever done this to yourself? Have you ever thought if I only I didn’t procrastinate I’d be richer, smarter, thinner, funnier, or better in some way. Whenever I’m procrastinating David Bowie’s song “Under Pressure” starts playing in my head, it goes something like this, "Procrastination, coming down on me, crashing over me. Dee-dum, dooby-do bada, living on the streets.” Yeah, I don’t ever remember the actual words, but since we’re talking procrastination these work!

Back to procrastinating…perhaps you’ve planned to complete a certain task. Maybe it’s to clean out the closet or set-up a Word Press blog. You go to your computer and get online. You have every intention of creating your blog, yet you somehow get distracted by Facebook or Twitter. Before you know it 40 minutes have passed and still no blog. Though you have managed to thank everyone for the nice comments they made about your new profile picture. In these moments I find myself grumbling and telling myself to get started already!
I decided to try something different. I asked myself why I procrastinate. Try it, simply ask yourself, "Why do I procrastinate?" There’s a reason and it’s not because you’re lazy or you love how good it makes you feel to put things off one more time. I discovered I’m prone to procrastinate on projects that could cause people to take notice of me, what if people don’t like what I have to say or what if they do? What if I’m ridiculed or what if I succeed at it? Success is super scary; to me it represents new places, experiences, and maybe growth.  Ask yourself why you procrastinate, what are you protecting yourself from? It might be something totally unexpected.
I’ve been interviewing several people for my upcoming blog series ‘Interviews with Awesomeness.’ This series will be focusing on EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), health, and creating more self-love, confidence & happiness in our lives. I’ve been a bit lax in setting a specific start date. With some self-questioning, tapping guidance from Carol Look, and a bit of love I have picked a date!! My ‘Unlocking Your Awesome Self & Attracting What You Want’ series will start next week on Tuesday July 30, 2013. My first interview is with the lovely Erica House a vegetarian, personal trainer, writer, marathon runner, and she also has a Master’s in Psychology. Check out Erica’s website here, and be prepared for some awesome tips and sharing going on next week!
In case you were wondering about Carol Look and tapping, I will now fill you in. Carol Look is an EFT Master and has a PhD in Clinical Hypnotherapy; a true Emotional Freedom Technique guru! I found an excellent EFT script she has on procrastination.  I’ve used it a couple of times, it helps me become motivated to get things done.  Try Carol’s helpful YouTube on ‘Eliminating Procrastination with EFT.’

Letting Go of Resistance

Not too long ago I wrote a blog about how scary it is to take care of ourselves and love ourselves. When we are able to love ourselves right where we’re at amazing and truly beautiful things start to happen. We draw in more of the ‘good stuff’ like happy clients/customers, laughing & loving friends and relationships, and more abundance. Life is better when we feel better and realize our own awesomeness.

I shied away from loving myself for many years; a part of me didn’t think I was truly lovable. An even bigger part was afraid of what would happen when I loved me…What woul happen? How much would I change and grow? Growth can be a really scary thing, but growing or shifting is a part of life…a really awesome part when we allow it.
When we relax our bodies, allowing automatically occurs.
I have created an EFT script to help you feel better about growth. It’s designed to help you let go of any resistance you may have.  You will start by saying the set-up statements “Even though…” while tapping the Karate Chop point, then tap through the other points while saying the rest of the script.

Karate Chop: Even though I still have a great deal of resistance, I choose to love and accept myself anyway. Even though I have a lot of insecure & resistant thoughts, I choose to deeply & completely love and accept myself and these thoughts too. Even though I feel a great deal of resistance where growth & money is involved, I choose to love and accept myself.
I am willing to shift, I am willing to start to let go of this resistance.
I choose to love & accept myself and my resistance.
There are parts of me that are afraid to shift.
Those parts of me that say bad things to me
Those parts of me that doubt my ability
I’m choosing to love those parts.
I’m going to love those parts right now.
I’m going to open these parts of me up & fill them with love & beautiful sunshine.
I choose to love all parts of me.
I choose to be willing to grow & to shift.
I am willing to release my tremendous need to resist.
I choose to start releasing that need to feel guilty
I choose to start releasing the need to put myself down.
I choose to start releasing all these fear based thoughts
I choose to release these thoughts that tell me that I can’t have all these things
That I can’t be all these things
I am willing to release my need to resist.
I am willing to release the pattern at my core level that is creating the resistance.
This pattern keeps me in the same place.
That little girl/boy that’s scared, I choose to love her/him now.
I’m going to wrap my arms around her/him, I’m going to be like a mama bear.
I’m going to take care of her and love her now.
I choose to love this little child in a way that I don’t think she ever felt love before.
I’m going to look at her and remember that I’m an adult and I’m strong.
I’m smart & Brave.
I’m going to teach this little girl to be strong, smart and brave too.
That’s all she needs!
I’m going to tell her how much value she has, and how smart & capable she is
And how much she can give and share with the world.
It’s okay to love all of me.
It’s safe to love me.
It’s safe to start to let go of some of this resistance.
I’m going to release some of my resistance with love.
Going to let it go, I release it and let it go.
Releasing my resistance with love and letting it go.
It’s okay to let this go now.
What if I no longer resisted?
I don’t know what that would be like,
I’ve resisted most of my life.
I’ve been scared my entire life.
What if I wasn’t scared?
What if I didn’t resist, how would things be different?
What if I no longer needed to be scared?
What if I no longer needed to resist life?
What if I’m opening up to life right now?
What if I allow the Universe/God to lead me?
What if I trust in the Universe?
What if I trust in myself?
I am shifting now.
I am shifting into a state of allowing.
I choose to allow the good in.
I choose to allow life to flow through me.
I ask the Universe to co-create with me now.
I trust myself, I trust the world.
It is safe to trust me.
It is safe to trust the universe.
All is well, I am peaceful & safe.
Peace & love surround me and keep me safe.
Namaste~

Wanting More Money

Why do you want more money?
Money is a fantastic tool, but before you acquire, have, and spend it you need to get clear on why you want it and what you plan to do with it. I often ask myself what my money goals are, how to make more money, how to manage money, and what will I do with more money?

This has been the hardest thing for me, I know I want more money and at times I think I know why I want it – bills, charity, new car, cute tops, etc. Then I think, “Cute tops? This is why you want money?” I have cute tops already, there has to be more to it than that. I sat down with my trusty notebook and pen and wrote down all the reasons I want more money. This is what I came up with:

1.   Ability to pay my bills on time every month.

2.   Freedom to travel to far off places or simply to California to give my friend Sara a hug!

3.   Help my loved ones when they need an extra hand.

4.   Give more to the environmental & animal rights organizations I love- Help our planet!

5.   Grow my EFT business.

I took a deep breath after I wrote this list. I was glad to realize that I don’t want more money simply for cute tops! I mean cute tops are great, but there is so much more to living than looking/dressing good. I have a mission, to help women & men who are ready to expand, while they learn to like & love the amazing person they truly are. That’s what Emotional Freedom Technique has done for me. I’d love it if it could do that for every other person I meet too!
When you have money or you’re wanting money it can be tricky figuring out how to get it and what to do when you’ve got it. There are plenty of money guru’s out there that can help get you back on track, saving more, and having more money. I’ve been watching a whole lot of Marie Forleo vids lately, she has amazing tips on what to do with your money.
I have also been reading Suze Orman’s book Woman & Money for the 3rd time and listening to some of her CD’s. I have to tell you Suze scares the crap out of me, but she makes so much sense. She’s extremely intense and gets right to the point. There is also a great website for women DailyWorth.com. You can sign up for free tips and their advice is a bit gentler than Suze’s.
The main thing is to get clear on your money situation and your money goals. Once you have done that you will have some clarity on what to do next.
If you’re still in the dark about Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) check out my YouTube Channel to discover how awesome it is.
Also, be sure to visit my Facebook page and don’t be afraid to ‘Like’ it!
I’d love it if you’d share some tweets with me on Twitter.
Love for your day~

Every Great Journey Begins With the Very First Step

My book, Fall HeadOver EFT For Her: Men Meet & Date the Woman of Your Dreams with EmotionalFreedom Technique is finally on Amazon! After all the editing, formatting, and EBook cover making…it’s online!! This is a really proud moment for me; it’s also a bit dreamlike.

I began writing FallHead Over EFT For Her several years ago. It all started when one of my dear guy friends was having trouble with his love life. I gave him some tips that really helped him out. I’ve seen so many of my male, friends, clients, and co-workers struggle to find a wonderful woman that suits them. Sometimes they’re lacking confidence, dating skills, or they’re simply not going to places they have the potential of meeting her.

I thought if only they had a guide that would help them navigate the dating sphere and better understand and interact with women. Thus began the making, or I should say writing of Fall Head Over EFT For Her. This book has transformed and turned into something unique and extremely valuable, especially since integrating Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).

EFT has changed the way I think, feel, and live. Since starting my EFT coaching I’ve been able to help myself and others open up to love again. Emotional Freedom Technique has added so much to my life, my profession, and this book.

Go to Amazon and get a copy of Fall Head Over EFT For Her: Men Meet & Date the Woman of YourDreams with Emotional Freedom Technique today! If not for yourself, for any man in your life you love (friend, brother, cousin, son, etc.) who very much wants to meet and date his dream girl.

Please share this blog with friends and family and visit my YouTube channel for helpful EFT videos.
